History may be included in the Ujian Penilaian Sekolah Rendah examination.

Deputy Education Minister Datuk Razali Ismail said the proposal was being discussed by his ministry. “The ministry is also proposing that History be taught to students from Standard 3 to Form 5," he told reporters at the Parliament lobby yesterday. For Standard 1 and 2 pupils, the element of history will be included in humanity and language subjects.

Razak said the syllabus for the history subject would be determined after discussions by several parties, including teachers and representatives of parent-teacher associations.

"In our efforts to transform the curriculum, we have to take into account the prime minister's proposal to make history a compulsory subject in primary schools," he said.

Although history is not a specific subject in primary schools , it is being taught in Kajian Tempatan for pupils in Standard 4 to 6.

"History is among the components in Kajian Tempatan besides economy, environment and the success of Malaysia," he said.
